Les origines du prieuré Notre Dame de Bourgenay datent, sans doute, du XIIe siècle. Ce prieuré Bénédictin dépendait probablement de l’abbaye de Maillezais (Sud Vendée). Il passa, en 1648, sous la dépendance du chapitre de la cathédrale de La Rochelle quand l’évêché y fut transféré. Par manque d’entretien, il commença ensuite à se détériorer. A la Révolution, les bâtiments du prieuré furent vendus comme « Bien National », seule la crypte échappa à la démolition.
Au XIXe siècle, le comte de Beaumont devient propriétaire des lieux et entreprend la reconstruction d’une partie du prieuré. En 1891, fût construit le château attenant à la chapelle.

The origins of the prieuré Notre-Dame of Bourgenay date, doubtless, the XIIth century. This prieuré Benedictine depended probably on the abbey of Maillezais (the South Vendée). It passed, in 1648, under the dependence of the chapter of the cathedral of La Rochelle when the bishop's palace was transferred to it. Due to the lack of maintenance, it began then to deteriorate. In the Revolution, the buildings of the prieuré were sold as "very National", only the crypt escaped the demolition.
In the XIXth century, the count of Beaumont becomes an owner of the place and begins the reconstruction of a part of the prieuré. In 1891, is built the castle adjacent to the chapel.
