Indian Village Church - a photo on Flickriver

When I originally saw this old building near Cromwell, Indiana I assumed it must have been a one room school (see photo below). Later I found out it had been built around the turn of the century as an EUB (Evangelical United Brethren) church that was located right across the road from another EUB church, that one brick. Apparently around 1892 they split over a disagreement on whether to allow members to join secret societies, like the Freemasons. Those who approved the practice continued to use the old brick church and those who disapproved built this new structure.

The other church is still being used, now as the Indian Village Methodist Church and this one serves as a farm building. That may be changing though as I looked it up on Google Street Side (seen here) and it appears that the siding, as well as the steeple, has been removed, revealing the original clapboards. Perhaps someone is doing a restoration. I would be curious to hear from the local people how that went with the EUB congregation split for years. Seems like a touchy issue in such a small place!

The crossroads now known as Indian Village was originally called Alcinda. It is in Noble County, Indiana near Cromwell.
