El monasterio de San Pedro de Arlanza, situado en la localidad burgalesa de Hortigüela (Castilla y León, España) a orillas del río que le da nombre, fue uno de los centros monásticos más importantes del condado y luego reino de Castilla. Aunque los restos más antiguos existentes hoy en el conjunto monacal, correspondientes a la iglesia, datan de 1080, la congregación fue fundada en 912 como un eremitorio, de ruinas aún visibles, en la parte alta de las paredes que flanquean el valle. Este monasterio recibió el apelativo de «cuna de Castilla» y estuvo en funcionamiento hasta la desamortización de Mendizábal en el 1835.
En 1931 fue declarado Monumento Histórico-Artístico.

The monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza, located in the Burgos town of Hortigüela (Castilla y León, Spain) on the banks of the river that gives it its name, was one of the most important monastic centers in the county and later the kingdom of Castile. Although the oldest remains existing today in the monastic complex, corresponding to the church, date back to 1080, the congregation was founded in 912 as a hermitage, with ruins still visible, in the upper part of the walls that flank the valley. This monastery received the nickname "cradle of Castile" and was in operation until the confiscation of Mendizábal in 1835.
In 1931 it was declared a historic artistic monument.

La escena se rodó en el interior de las ruinas del histórico Monasterio de San Pedro de Arlanza en Hortigüela. Los exteriores se ruedan en el Cortijo de El Fraile en Nijar (Almería).
La Misión de San Antonio se trata de un convento religioso convertido en hospital militar atestado de heridos y donde “Tuco” (Eli Wallach) lleva a curar las heridas a “El Rubio” (Clint Eastwood) después de cruzar el desierto.
Los planos contienen gran detalle escenográfico como la habitación atestada de esculturas llevadas para dejar espacio a los heridos lo que favorece mucho al realismo de la situación dado que la acción se desarrolla en New Mexico donde la herencia cultural de la dominación española sigue siendo muy fuerte.
Como curiosidad, en esta escena, cuando Eastwood esta tumbado en la cama, puede verse por la ventana del habitáculo la silueta de la ermita de San Pelayo sobre una loma cercana al Monasterio.
El lugar donde se rodó la escena es en la actualidad un parte privada del Monasterio situada sobre el refectorio, y las habitaciones donde se recupera El Rubio, y donde Tuco se encuentra con su hermano Pablo Ramírez, están en ruina y hundidas.

The scene was shot inside the ruins of the historic San Pedro de Arlanza Monastery in Hortigüela. The exteriors are filmed at the Cortijo de El Fraile in Nijar (Almería).
The Mission of San Antonio is a religious convent converted into a military hospital packed with wounded and where "Tuco" (Eli Wallach) takes "El Rubio" (Clint Eastwood) to heal the wounds after crossing the desert.
The plans contain great scenographic detail such as the room crowded with sculptures carried to make room for the wounded, which greatly favors the realism of the situation since the action takes place in New Mexico where the cultural heritage of Spanish domination is still very strong.
As a curiosity, in this scene, when Eastwood is lying in bed, the silhouette of the hermitage of San Pelayo on a hill near the Monastery can be seen through the window of the cabin.
The place where the scene was filmed is currently a private part of the Monastery located above the refectory, and the rooms where El Rubio is recovered, and where Tuco meets his brother Pablo Ramírez, are in ruins and sunk.
