Flame and Cardinal 1741a - a photo on Flickriver

            For at least two months, I'd been trying to explain the differences in color and size for the Flame Skimmer, the most numerous dragonfly after the Blue Darner, and the Cardinal Meadowhawk, the smaller but redder dragon. Well, it took some twisting of perspective, and severe cropping, but here is the one shot where both species were on the same branch (just a little too far from each other).

The Flame Skimmer is one of the larger dragons at 3 inches long. Seen alone, it would appear to be a very red dragonfly. In actuality, it is orange early in the year and orange brown after about six weeks. The Cardinal Meadowhawk, on the other hand, is 2.5 inches and is truly red, the kind of red that is blown out as often as whites! 

There are two even redder than the Cardinal, the Firecracker and the Red-veined Dragonflies.
