California Scrub Jay 4754 - a photo on Flickriver

            Yesterday, I went back to the pond, and there was very little activity, that is, until I stopped and watched the still-bare trees and edges of the pond where reeds have died off. There! A flash of blue! A California Scrub Jay digging in the grass and coming up an acorn, either cache or that of a squirrel or crow. I got one of the best photos of twigs that you've ever seen! 

Oh, over there! Yellow! The Tropical Kingbird is indeed a resident, his sixth year since he came to visit. More yellow! A flock of Yellow-rumped warblers. And on the pond, 47 Ring-necked ducks with a Bufflehead in the middle. A floating cake with a cherry on top. 

In all, seven species of birds I haven't seen in quite a while. A promise of a good year, but it's going to take work. The trees are budding or in bloom (pear, apple, and oak), and they will leaf soon. That means that I'll have to deal with birds IN trees and once again, leaves. But for now, it's twigs. Solution: shoot the color as I did with a shot of a Northern Flicker on the ground in bushes and 150 feet away. I took several shots of a little red and some movement, but didn't know what I had until I got home. Pleasant surprises are in store for all of us ... even in the frozen north. That clump of snow may be an owl!
