For those of you who thought the Fat Euphorbia I posted yesterday was "extoic" or "unique," let me introduce you to the Passion Fruit flower!

Last week, as I was leaving Ruth Bancroft Garden, I happened to look up, and there was an intricate flower that I immediately recognized as a passion fruit flower. I had seen and photographed one several years ago (with fruit) at a ranch on Mt. Diablo. That species which was slightly different than this, bloomed for two months and produced fruit. This flower bloomed for less than 48 hours, and has not returned even though the stems and leaves are still a bright green and in good health. It was a good thing that, as hot and tired as I was, I took several shots because it won't bloom again until next year.

Passiflora laurifolia, commonly known as the water lemon, Jamaican honeysuckle, golden bellapple, pomme liane on Martinique & Guadeloupe and orange lilikoi (yellow lilikoi, or simply lilikoi, is the name given to passiflora edulis v. flavicarpa for the valley where it first grew in Hawai'i), is a species in the family Passifloraceae. It is native to tropical Americas.

If anyone knows the nomenclature of this flower, I'd love to know. I mean, which is the petal or is this one of those plants like the Bicolor where the leaves become petals? The stamen is huge, so are all the parts of the lavender fringe pistils?

The kicker is that this is the state flower for Kentucky! I've never thought of Kentucky as exotic or tropical. Perhaps it's the species I found on Mt. Diablo. I'll post that species later this summer.
