Lou - a photo on Flickriver

Lou

            This was a portrait that I did not want to take, but the subject insisted. I met Lou in a bar in Nogales, Mexico through a mutual friend. Lou asked me what kind of photography I did, and when he saw my portraits, he demanded that I take his. He told me that he wanted people to see how happy he was, even though he was terribly disfigured from a liver condition brought on by chronic drinking. Lou told me that he had stopped drinking ten years ago but the disfigurement progressed. He told me he had five grown children, all of whom are men who are Federales, or Federal police officers. He told me that his wife still finds him handsome, and his sons are very proud of him for stopping drinking and helping others to recover from alcoholism. He insisted I take the portrait, and I wanted to honor him by doing so. I wish I had the sense of self-esteem that Lou does because he feels his suffering is not in vain, and that he is being useful by helping others recover from the ravages of alcoholism.
