The 2016 Summer Olympics just finished up in Rio, the United States was the over-all leader in the medal count by a large margin. One of the events that I watched because my daughters and I have been following her since she won her first gold medal back in 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens were multiple matches of beach volleyball where the team of Kerry Walsh Jennings and April Ross played. Ultimately Walsh and Ross won the Brass Medal, for Kerry who had won the previous 3 Gold Medals for Women’s beach volleyball with her old partner Misty May-Treanor in 2004, 2008 and 2013 it was perhaps a sign that at age 38 she may be getting close to end of an incredible career. She is probably without question the second greatest female beach volleyball player in history and with Misty May-Treanor who is considered the greatest female player the duo formed the greatest female beach volleyball team in history. Misty May retired after she and Walsh won Gold in 2012 Olympics in London.
Both of my daughters played volleyball in high school, my oldest four years, the youngest only one. It was my oldest who was a member of the high school team that in 2004 won the New Jersey State Championship the fall after the Olympics in Athens. I always tried to be present at all my kids volleyball, softball or basketball games, their band concerts with my photo gear, so that year was one fun run through the regular season and through the state playoffs and in the end they were champions. She is asked and goes back every year and plays in the alumni game with many of her old teammates, definitely the most athletic of my three children.
So this image of Kerry Walsh Jennings receiving the serve with Misty May-Treanor getting ready to set it up for Kerry was taken in 2005 at the AVP (The Association of Volleyball Professionals) Belmar tournament that was held on the New Jersey Shore at Belmar Beach in a semi-final game. My oldest daughter volunteered at the tournament that in the end the May-Walsh team won the women’s bracket, they would win the overall AVP championship in 2005. We got to meet both of them, my daughter got to get photographed with them, it was a fun experience that she’d repeat several more years. Honestly both were extremely approachable and sweet, this is not a sport with a large following, and the athletes seem to genuinely enjoy interacting with the fans
Image taken on Minolta X-700 with Minolta MD 70-210mm F4.0 lens with 3X tele-convertor on Kodacolor Gold 100 film (my daughter wanted prints for herself), processed in Photomatix Pro and cleaned up in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.
