A devout Hindu Kanwariya - a photo on Flickriver

            Kanwariyas or the carriers of holy Ganga water dot the roads in North India in August every year as they walk from a Ganges water source to a Shiva temple to slake or cool the epic blue throat of the Hindu God who had to swallow the poison to prevent a catastrophe for the Universe.

A clever kitschy calendar art depiction of Shiva with his consort festooned on a red maroon round neckT shirt, the Bhakt stood testing the balance and the weight of the panniers for the fag end of the holy jouney that they must all cover by foot.

This practice of carrying Ganges water has caught on in a big way with the younger generation. The number of Kanwariyas keeps on increasing every year. 
In the recent history of Hinduism, Ganesha Puja has surfaced as a form of successful practice throughout the country. This movement had its origin in making a wider section of the population to be able to worship a God in a temple or at home as a move against the worship centres and the Gods  being confined to the elite segment of the Hindu caste system.

Let us see if the Kanwariyas can open up accessibility further.
