A Post Card From Tawang - a photo on Flickriver

            A wide view of the valley of Tawang and the ever present monastery on the top of the hill. It is a stunning sight to behold for its sheer presence. The aesthetic quotient is very high. The  yellow roofs work like magic in the midst of green and red of the mountain side. 

Tawang is a Buddhist centre of the Gelupka sect and is at an important cross road of history. 

The Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan and the Indian states of  Arunachal Pradesh, Ladakh and  Sikkim are the only  places in the south Asian sub continent where Buddhism is a religion and the preferred way fo life. All of them are tucked away in the remote mountainside where the long arm of the proselytizing Christian missionaries and the even longer sword of the Moslem conquerors could not reach to convert the hill people. From the 7th century AD till the 20th century these hamlets of Peace and Tranquility flourished with the tenets of Buddhism. People continued to be in a state of ever lasting bliss cut away from the depradations of the fast changing world all around. The remoteness and Buddhism went hand in hand to nourish a society that was content and happy and did not seek a material nirvana.

Buddhism became a prominent way of life in the 6th -8th century AD replacing in part the animistic worship of the local inhabitants. Roughly around that time there was a great revivalistic fervor that was sweeping the plains of India as Hindusim gained resurgence and Buddhism vanished from the plains for ever. The move into these Himalayan kindgdom represents the last flight of a religion once so popular and widespread. 

Tawang stands at the cross roads of history with China claiming it as its own. Buddhism itself it at a cross road and let us see how this and other peaceful hamlets of the mountainous region manage.
