A boat or flying saucer cruise ? - a photo on Flickriver

            The 15-meter-diameter work was thought of as a World War II shipwreck that would transform into a spaceship evoking the city's transformation in the Bassins afloat district, which is finally emerging from the ground. It was built in the workshops of Métalobil, specialized in original creations, in Nantes. It was designed by Suzanne Treister, a renowned London artist. The steel sculpture incorporates materials from the wreck of the Garonne. On her website, Suzanne Treister explains her approach: "In 2013, I was struck by the presence of many WWII ships still submerged in the Garonne, some of which are exposed on the surface of the water. I felt the closeness of the Second World War in the psychology of the city, as if memories were just under the surface of the water like these warships, ready to emerge. I thought of turning one of these wrecks into something else, like an alchemical operation, to embody the physical process of city change. So I had the idea to transform it into a spaceship. ”

L’œuvre de 15 mètres de diamètre a été pensée comme une épave de navire de la Seconde Guerre mondiale qui se transformerait en un vaisseau spatial évoquant la mutation de la ville dans le quartier des Bassins à flot, qui finit de sortir de terre. Elle a été construite dans les ateliers de Métalobil, spécialisé dans les créations originales, à Nantes. Elle a été conçue par Suzanne Treister, une artiste londonienne réputée. La sculpture en acier intègre des matériaux de récupération d'une épave de la Garonne. Sur son site, Suzanne Treister explique sa démarche: «En 2013, j'ai été frappée par la présence de nombreux navires de la Seconde Guerre mondiale encore immergés dans la Garonne et dont certains affleurent à la surface de l’eau. J’ai ressenti la proximité la seconde guerre mondiale dans la psychologie de la ville, comme si les souvenirs étaient juste sous la surface de l'eau tels ces bateaux de guerre, prêts à émerger. J'ai songé à transformer l’une de ces épaves en quelque chose d'autre, comme dans une opération alchimique, pour incarner le processus physique des changements de la ville. J'ai donc eu l'idée de la transformer en vaisseau spatial.»
