            Border style morris dancing originated along the England - Wales border, Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire in the 17th century. Workers 

supplemented their income with a bit of dancing and illegal begging, They blackened their faces to hide their identity from employers and the law, 

black being a most effective disguise.  Dancers wear "tatters" masses of highly colourful rag ribbons and elaborate headdresses, often featuring 

tall pheasant feathers. The Wild dances, raucous dancers, driving rhythms and enthusiastic crashing of sticks, is in complete contrast to the more 

familliar "cotswold" morris. There is absolutely NO connection with ‘Minstrel’ shows. Modern sensitivities to people blackening faces [evidenced 

by two of this set finding thier way onto "explore, only to be removed], has led to many morris sides adopting new colours, two tone black and 

red, pagan symbols & even metallic blue. Others are determined to keep the traditional black. Twelve of these sides met at Ledbury, Herefordshire, 

in April 2019, for the Black Meet. and to celebrate 50 years of local side Silurian Morris.
