Maggie's Farm

            Devonshire Dock Hall, one of Barrow-in-Furness's most recognisable landmarks. Viewed across Walney Channel from The Promenade, Walney Island. Conceived in 1977 and fully operational by 1988, DDH enables BAE Systems to build submarines and surface craft under cover. When opened, it was described as the most advanced naval shipbuilding facility in the world. Locals nicknamed the cavernous structure Maggie's Farm (after the former Prime Minister who took the nation to war) and Barrow's answer to Wembley Stadium. At the time of its construction, the shipyard owners were Vickers, who emerged as the privatised VSEL.
