Bay of Islands, Victoria - a photo on Flickriver

            The Bay of Islands and the Bay of Martyrs are close to each other and very similar to look at. Both are close to the Twelve Apostles and well worth a stop-off to view in more detail. The formations are huge, and on a beautiful clear day look stunning in the sunlight. On gloomier days, they take on a more sinister appearance, but are no less dramatic and spectacular.

The naming of the Bay of Martyrs may be related to the alleged massacre of indigenous Karrae-Wurrong people in this area by British colonial forces. Some say men were run off the cliffs to plunge to their deaths, while women and children were killed inland at a different location. The contradictory story claims the large drop in the indigenous population size was a result of mass migration. You can make up your own mind on which one is more likely true.
