Grazing the Duckweed Waves - a photo on Flickriver

            Wetlands in our urban areas still can provide all sorts of neat habitat! Common Duckweed (the tiny plant we mainly see in this image) is a food source for many birds and fish, especially ducks, as its name would suggest. Duckweed also provides shelter and protection for aquatic (water) animals, such as frogs, snakes, fish, insects, crustaceans, and others. 

Here a tiny snail grazes along some duckweed in emergent wetlands located at Parkfield Lake Park in Denver's Montbello neighborhood.  I had lots of kids coming up and asking me why the heck I was taking pictures of "pond scum."  When I showed them the myriad of life at their feet, the kids got excited to look for more, so hopefully I have planted some seeds for the next era of wetland ecologists.  ;-))) 

Image Notes:  Everything in this entire scene is tiny! Those duckweed leaves are just a tad bigger than sesame seeds to give you an idea as to scale.  I shot this using my Marumi DHG Macro +3 330 Achromat Achromatic Close up Lens attached to the Nikon 24-120 shot at 120 mm for a magnification factor of 0.69.
