Down the Mineshaft

Human eyes can see 24 different stops of the light range, taking into account the pupil dilation and contraction as a result of variation in light levels from highlights to shadows.
Cameras, however, only make instantaneous exposures, with film and expensive medium format digital cameras being able to capture 12 different stops of light variations, while most other digital cameras can only capture about 5 stops of light variations or even less.

In this shaft I couldn't see the details in the black walls anymore, even after some concentration, whereas the sunlit coverings outside were almost too bright for the eye, seen from the tunnel.
This was made with a digital 35mm. ISO 400 50mm f/4.0 1,5 sec.
Awkward then to make an image without additional light or to take only one shot instead of several, with the aim of photo stacking.
I was totally impressed by the beauty of ambient light on the floor and the athmosphere provoked by the darkness. Did I miss the boat ?

How cumbersome it must have been to acclimatise in the daylight after many hours of drudging inside the pit.
