Street lavatories, Yorkshire, 1972.

            Every street of back-to-back houses incorporated one of these intercommunicating alleys lined with lavatories.  That's right, none of the houses had toilets.  When it was time for a turnout, this is where you went.  I don't think the houses could have had "allocated" facilities.  There seemed many more houses than toilets, and the fact that the little alley is open to two parallel streets suggests that it was meant to be used by the residents of either.  I don't mean to be indelicate, but I suppose there must have been a procession every morning of people bearing chamber-pots freighted with the night's evacuations.
