On human frailty

            As an additional perquisite of the Fray Bentos photostream's outstanding service, I have sometimes thought of assembling a Flickr album called "Lookalikes".  There have been quite a few over the years, ranging from Belper's own George Brown ...a deeply flawed man, recognisably human, and a favourite from among the political figures of my lifetime... to a dead ringer for A L Rowse, spotted on another occasion not far away in Guildford.  Today I bring you ...who do you think?  Obviously that fellow, with the prominent eyebrows and the slicked-down black hair, rounding the corner on the opposite pavement, it's ...come on now ...it's obviously Alan Turing.
Boffins like Turing are not normally my cup of tea, but I rather took a shine to him after reading that he'd converted his life savings to silver ingots, which he'd buried during the War in woods near Bletchley Park.  Unfortunately he was unable, in after years, to identify the spot where he'd buried them.  It's tragic, but also comic.  One is reminded of one's self and one's failings and is reassured by the knowledge that even very clever people are also stupid.  One feels the bond of a common humanity.
The photograph was taken in Reading on Monday 29th March 1976.  I'm sure one of you locals will recognise the location, which was probably on the walk from the station to the Alder Valley garage.  Would silver register on a metal detector?
