Same old same old

            A Bristol RESL with dual-door body ...an uncommon combination... in the Alder Valley fleet.  New to Thames Valley in March 1968 according to Bus Lists.  It was photographed across the road from Reading Station on a bleak old day, Wednesday 18th February 1976.  I travelled from here to Windsor aboard an ex-Scottish VRT.  An inspector came clumping up the stairs and scrutinised my NBC "privilege" pass.  The route terminated at  Windsor Station, which I immediately recognised from a recent television airing of Two Way Stretch, whose closing sequences had been filmed there.  I was a great mediaevalist at the time and wanted to combine omnibological affairs with a mooch around the castle.  This accomplished, I caught another ex-Scottish VRT to Maidenhead and returned to Reading aboard an ex-Notts & Derby LD Lodekka.  It looks such a short distance on a map, but the journey seemed interminable.  I recall the blowing noise of the "heater" under the seat, rising and falling with the engine revs, but always lagging a little behind them.  This alone was enough to induce drowsiness.  Back at Reading Station, I waited for my train back to Bristol Parkway.  At 15:50 there was the twang of a horn, a soaring, zooming sound and D1069 Western Monitor accelerated off the Reading West curve and through the station with the up Cornish Riviera Limited.  Non-stop from Exeter and not due at Paddington until 16:35, it must have been something like fifteen minutes early.  It was all routine at the time; what might one pay to re-live these things?
