Up into the light

            It was Friday 30th December 1977 and, as with any bus at that time of year, the lower panels and windows of Alder Valley's no. 889 were mired with spray-borne dirt drawn up from the road.  The bus was, of course, one of those involved in the exchange of Scottish Bus Group Bristol VRTs for National Bus Company FLF Lodekkas a few years before.  This particular VRT had come from Western SMT.  It is seen emerging from the bus station in Reading, which, as I remember it, was hidden away in the basement of a multi-storey car park, or office development, among discoloured concrete columns, stalactites, florescent lights and, overhead, a black void whose ceiling was forever obscured by a permanent stratum of diesel exhaust.
