Matsudana - a photo on Flickriver

Matsudana

            Matsudana, built in 1966 as his own house by the architect Jack Digby on the Hall Park development at Great Barton, near Bury St Edmunds.  "An essay in privacy" says Charles McKean in his Architectural Guide to Cambridge and East Anglia Since 1920.  He can say that again!  This peep at the entrance from the pavement outside is as good a view as the visiting architecture hound is likely to get.  All else is screened by white-painted brick walls.  Civic Trust commendation, 1968.
I quite like these horizontally emphasized single-storey houses (somehow the term "bungalow" seems incapable of application) which look well when surrounded by greenery ...I promise you I don't intend a sarcastic "back-handed compliment" when I say this... and seen against a backdrop of tall trees.  As for that door; well, the colour of the wood works well, but I'm afraid the fake Georgian panels and brazen door furniture will have to go.  What about the name?  Did Digby have children called Matthew, Susan and Dana?  The latter sounds a bit unlikely.  Googling, I discovered there was a variety of willow called Salix matsudana, so perhaps that's something to do with it.
