Sunday in the City

            The further you get from buildings like this the better they look.  Glittering in the sun across several miles of brown, spray-painted brickwork, railway sidings and 1960s maisonnettes, the skyline of the City of London has a kind of beauty.  From a quarter of a mile away, as here, there is no ignoring the grandeur of these citadels of imaginary money.  My complaint is that they always look terrible close up at street level.
I suppose I ought to know what this building is, but you cease to "keep pace" after the age of 25 and I am hopelessly out of touch with recent developments.  It is one of the more elegant of the recent "high profile" towers and superior, in my view, to the unjustly celebrated neighbouring building known as "the Gherkin" ...why, I don't know, since it is not gherkin-shaped and, if one were casting about for some happy resemblance, a suppository might suggest itself.  The image is not entirely satisfactory.  The light conditions obtaining at the time were of a type I particularly dislike ...i.e. sky blue and bright, but sun behind a cloud (I'll wait for a maximum of five minutes for it to come out) so that saturation is poor at ground level.  I've used the "poor man's tilt-shift" of perspective correction to get the verticals approximately right.
