London Transport E/1 tram No. 592 - a photo on Flickriver

            An old photograph of London Transport (LT) E/1 class tram No. 592 showing '38 - Embankment via Old Kent Rd & Westr' destination indicators. *On the right is a Co-Operative lorry delivering flowers and vegetables. ** The photo was taken on Basildon Road, Abbey Wood (tram about to turn right in to Bostall Hill).

The photo reverse is stamped with the photographer (and/or negative owner) name of W. J. Haynes.

No. 592 was an ex London County Council Tramways (LCC) car, it was built in 1930 by English Electric seating 27/46 and ran on Mountain & Gibson maximum traction class 4.LCC trucks. From new it had trolley poles plus a plough carrier to run off overhead or conduit (running off overhead in this photo).

These particular trams were known as 'Reconstructed Subway Cars', because when built they took the fleet number, trucks, and electrical equipment from class F and G (this car was ex class G) single deck cars that had run through the Kingsway Subway which was being enlarged to take double deck cars.

Its ownership transferred to the London Passenger Transport Board (LPTB) in 1933 and in Sep 1939 it had driver screens (driver/platform vestibules) fitted. In Aug 1952 it was officially withdrawn from service and sent to Penhall Road Works to be disposed of (broken up or sold), the parts of the London tramways system that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to trolleybus/bus operation had closed the previous month.

RACS (Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society) 'flowers & vegetables'. A large consumer co-operative based in south east London taking its name from the Royal Arsenal munitions works in Woolwich. Its motto was: "Each for all and all for each", in 1985 it merged into the national Co-operative Wholesale Society.

"Fairly sure this is on Basildon Road, Abbey Wood - tram about to turn right in to Bostall Hill.
The shop is no longer a co-op (1950 phone book confirms it was then) and has lost the decorative frontage - goo.gl/maps/nMKS5QhfejhxfiAz7
Possibly (but not conclusively) quite late in the life of London's tramways - the 'reconstructed subway' cars were generally kept on the Rotherhithe / Deptford 68 / 70 services, they were a bit slower than the standard variety - they went to bus operation in July 1951."
