Painted Anemone - Urticina grebelnyi (formerly Urticina crassicornis) Willow Point, Campbell River, BC

            The creatures that we get to see when there is an ultra low tide are simply amazing. I am not a diver and wish I could so I could get to see all the wonderful creatures of the deep. 
This anemone was larger than a dinner plate and was closed when I first came across it and as I wandered and came across it again, it was starting to open even though the tide was still quite a ways out. Was very fascinating to observe its movements as it anticipated the incoming tide.

The painted anemone has a wide colour range including red-green which is the most common and why this animal is often called a Christmas anemone.  It was so brilliant right on the beach, you could not miss it. Other possible colours include any combination of yellow, tan, green, brown, red or olive. It does not always have the ‘dribbling’ or blotched markings on the column. 
In order to survive, they use barbed tubules released from their stout tentacles to immobilize small fish, crustaceans and anything organic that drifts close enough to them. They also use them to deflect off any threats or attacks. This anemone can grow up to 30 cm (12 in) tall, with the column growing up to 25cm (10 in) wide and ranges from northern Alaska to southern California.  It is believed that these anemones can live between 60 to 80 years in the wild as they have lived in captivity up to 80+ years.
