Humpback Whale Tail/Flukes ~Megaptera novaeangliae~ Discovery Passage, British Columbia

Each humpback whale has different flukes, just like people all have different fingerprints. They are identified by looking at the patterns on the underside and the trailing edge of their flukes.

Humpback whales are a well traveled species, they are found in most of the world’s oceans. In the North Pacific, the population has made an impressive comeback in the past 40 years. These whales were heavily targeted by commercial whaling in the North Pacific until 1966; by the end of this harvest, there may have been as few as 1400 humpbacks left. Humpback world wide populations are currently estimated to be around 80,000 to 90,000 individuals, with most of these animals living in the North Pacific Ocean. Unfortunately, these populations have been declining in recent years due to a variety of factors, including climate change, overfishing, and entanglement in fishing gear. Increasing public awareness and education about the importance of protecting these majestic creatures seems to be helping. Some people are concerned with whale watching companies, but it is the opposite with the majority being part of their monitoring and protection.
