Today I was fortunate enough to be one of the VIPs at Irabina Autism Service's special presentation by Temple Grandin and Tim Sharp. An awesome honor, and an awesome event.

As part of the proceedings, Irabina wanted something special to present to Tim. Tim loves LEGO, and is actively involved in theatre, having recently collaborated with Ball Park Music and Dead Puppet Society for a Helpman nominated production that is opening here in Melbourne, in September.

The award had to be something special. A brick-built trophy wasn't going to cut it. To a budget. They are after all a charity. And, I think I've said before, it's a cause close to my heart. So I wanted to go the extra mile.

This is the result. A fully functional marionette, with a stand that allows it to work as a statuette, so that it is equally at home sitting on a trophy shelf, or gracing the stage of the Melbourne Arts Centre.

I could wax poetically about a number of tricks I used to make him work, his construction, how I sought to capture the raw simplicity that is such a beautiful part of Tim's aesthetic; or even just details that allow strings to be easily adjusted, and allow for separation and movement of parts.

But, I'd rather let the pictures talk. So I present to you, Laser Beak Man.
