Horn Brushes, 19th / early 20th century

            These Horn brushes are probably european. Horn goods were produced in large scale from circa 1200 AD in England. Horn is made of a polymeric protein named keratin, as all mammal's hairs and nails. This plastic material can be molded by heat and pressure, cut, inlaid with mother of pearl or metals and polished, as other natural plastics like Tortoiseshell. The bristles are also a polymeric material, boar hair, that in some cases can be hardly told from Nylon.
