HSS/FP Sync = The Magic Bullet? - a photo on Flickriver

Rather not.
If you want to exclude ambient light from your shots, than it is much better (1.66 stops better, to be precise), to set your camera on syncspeed.

As you can see, in shot 2, I switched (I had to switch) to HSS/FP Sync, and I lost two stops (1.66 stops to be precise, because now we are at 1/250 second, and not at 1/200 second anymore).

And as I went higher with my exposure time, I never got that back (shots 3--8 look exactly the same).
Ambient light and flash light were suppressed all the same due to the shorter exposure time----linearily, as you can see regarding my way of compensating shots 4--8 just by doubling the ISO setting.

So keep in mind, that, in HSS / FP Sync mode, one has to calculate with flash light exactly the same as with ambient light.
If you halve your exposure time, you will halve your flash lights' intensity.
