Preflash-compact camera triggers a Yongnuo speedlight via RF

            Ok, yes, this is a dumb shot in our bathroom -- anyway, took me some time to produce it :-))

Whuz this about?  Sometimes, you may want to trigger an external flash with a compact camera -- me too! Why? That's another story. :-) Here is how it works, at least works for me (see notes in the photo). Stuff used: Compact cam Leica D-Lux 2 (Aperture priority mode, red-eye reduction switched off), Sunpak opto trigger DSU-01, RF-stuff: Yongnuo YN-602, Speedlight: YN-460.

LESSONS LEARNED

First of all I had to change the batteries on the DSU-01. Even though the yellow display LEDs were working, the unit did not ...

Sometimes there are some contact problems between the RF-transmitter and the DSU... at the moment the devices are stucked together with the LED and the optocell pointing in the same direction

Normally I test these optocells with a small LED torchlight. this did not work with the DSU, because there is an IR filter integrated.

The switching voltage of the DSU is proportional to the incoming light. Actually the device can trigger a flashgun mounted on it, even with the LED torchlight pulse, but the RF transmitter can only be triggered via a flash, not via the torchlight (obviously the RF transmitter YN-602 needs a higher voltage)

The DLux sends one measuring preflash, the system worked best and stable on DSU setting "2nd S".

NOTE: Why not directly opto-triggering the flashgun? (btw: this one even has an optical cell integrated, even with preflash supression). Anyone who tried it knows: it does not work really good, it does not work outdoors, not in the sunlight, only with eye-contact between flash and cam.
