Thomas Cooper Gotch - Queen Clotilde [1905]

            Thomas Cooper Gotch (Kettering, Decemberb10, 1854 - Cornwall, May 1, 1931) was an English painter and book illustrator loosely associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement; he was the brother of John Alfred Gotch, the architect. Gotch studied art in London and Antwerp before he married and studied in Paris with his wife, Caroline, a fellow artist. 

Clothilde was the wife of Clovis I, founder of the Merovingian dynasty, and first king of what would later become France. She converted her husband to Christianity and is venerated as a saint. Gotch would have become familiar with the often-told story of Clovis and Clothilde while he was a student in Paris. He established his reputation through painting symbolic female figures, distinctively dressed, each adopting a pose in the manner of early Renaissance art.
