Rochester Cathedral and Castle in the evening light

            Very few cities have the cathedral and castle in quite such close proximity. The curtain wall of the castle is also one of the boundaries of the cathedral precinct. The Medway is the first major river you reach on the road from Dover to London (the second of course is the Thames). In early times the logical place to cross was at Rochester. This meant that it as strategically important hence the Roman garrison and the later Norman castle. Also it meant St Augustine after establishing a diocese in the other Kentish city Canterbury established a cathedral and monastery here in 604. The chuch you see was a new one just after the Norman conquest making it the oldest Norman cathedral nave in England.
