Lion Flag (National Flag of Sri Lanka)

            Being blessed with a Clear Blue Sky, I took this picture on a Day where the whole nation was celebrating it's 61st Independence, 4th February 2009.

The Sri Lankan Flag, also called the "Lion Flag" , consists of a Golden Lion passant, holding a sword in its right fore paw, in front of a Crimson Background, with 4 Golden "Sacred Fig" leaves (also known as Bo) in each corner. A yellow border is around the background, and to its left are 2 vertical stripes of similar size, in Saffron and Green, with the Saffron Stripe closer to the Lion.

After being adopted in 1950, the flag went through several changes in 1953 and in 1972.

The symbols in the Flag have specific meanings.

The Lion: The Sinhalese Ethnicity

The Vertical Green Stripe: The Muslim Ethnicity
The Yellow Border around the Flag: People from other cultures residing in Sri Lanka
The Crimson Background: Other Minor Religions, ethnic groups and refers to the rich colonial heritage and background.
The 4 Sacred Fig Leaves: Depicts Compassion, Kindness, Happiness and Equanimity
The Sword of the Lion: The Sovereignty of the Nation
Curly Hair on the Lion's Head: Religious observance, wisdom and meditation

The Handle of the Sword: Elements of Water, Fire, Earth and Air
The Nose of the Lion: Intelligence
The Two Front Paws of the Lion: Purity in handling Wealth
