CZA+parhelion+parhelic circle - a photo on Flickriver

            Three halo phenomena: a circumzenithal arc, parhelic circle and parhelion at Farnborough, Hampshire, UK on 22 July 2010.

The white horizontal arc (at bottom of picture) is part of a parhelic circle. This is a halo phenomenon that runs around the sky parallel to the horizon and at the same elevation as the sun. It is caused by reflection of sunlight from flat, plate-like ice crystals in the cirrus cloud.

The bright spot on the right side of the parhelic circle is a parhelion (commonly known as a mock sun or a sundog). Parhelia are caused by refraction of sunlight through the flat, plate-like hexagonal ice crystals in the cirrus cloud.

A circumzenithal arc is at the top of the picture. This bright arc, displaying the spectral colours, is a portion of a circle that is centred on the zenith (the part of the sky directly above the observer).
