Halt!

            Shield-Bearing Guard on Nuremberg’s St. Lorenz Church (Lorenzkirche).  This statue is on the column that stands to the right of the church’s entrance.  The articulated decor of this west-facing facade reflected the wealth of Nuremberg’s citizens.  Construction of the nave (the main chamber) took approximately 150 years (1250-1400).  Originally a Roman Catholic chuch, Lorenzkirche became a parish church of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria in 1525–eight years after the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.  It is remarkable that the opulent decor of the church survived its transition from Catholic to Protestant; such decor was often destroyed in a frenzy of iconoclasm during the upheaval associated with the Reformation.  Popular speculation is that Nuremberg’s wealthy citizens persuaded fellow parishioners to preserve these fruits of their ancestors’ investments and donations.  10 July 2015, Lorenzerplatz, Nuremberg (Nürnberg), Bavaria (Bayern), Germany (Deutschland)
