Joensuu Riverfront in Winter - a photo on Flickriver

            Even the fast flowing River Pielinen freezes over in interior eastern Finland's bitter winters. The little city of Joensuu (pop. 78,000) nestles along its banks.

The red-roofed Pakkahuone (Packing Hall) is now a performing arts space. Built in 1897, it was a packing hall for river craft and a customs office, before becoming an arts venue in the 1960s. The 50-metre-high spire belongs to the city's Jugendstil Lutheran parish church, designed by Josef Stenbäck and opened in 1903.
