Tornavento (Varese) – Ma dove nasce il Naviglio Grande?

            Del Naviglio Grande si conosce, anche iconograficamente, la Darsena a Milano e il tratto fronteggiato dalle famose ville nobiliari. Ma dove nasce realmente? 
Dallo “Sperone” sul fiume Ticino a Tornavento, circa mezzo chilometro a sud del ponte in ferro costruito nel 1890 e tuttora utilizzato per il transito verso la sponda piemontese in corrispondenza di Oleggio (Novara).
Il cosiddetto “incile” risale al 1177, anno di inizio dello scavo del Naviglio Grande, dapprima chiamato Ticinello perché sfruttava l’acqua derivante dal Ticino per l’irrigazione delle coltivazioni, ed è rimasto invariato pur a distanza di quasi 8 secoli e mezzo almeno nel tratto iniziale sino alla centrale idroelettrica di Turbigo. In seguito verrà utilizzato unicamente per la navigazione e cambierà anche nome: diventerà il Naviglio Grande. Si hanno notizie di barche che navigano già a partire dal 1198. Nel 1269 verrà poi prolungato fino a Milano e Pavia, giusto in tempo per essere utilizzato per il trasporto del marmo da Candoglia (presso Verbania sul lago Maggiore) per la costruzione del Duomo di Milano.
Infatti, dopo che ne era stata aumentata la portata d'acqua, nel 1271 il canale risultava navigabile tanto che cominciò ad essere denominato “navigium” e, quando nel 1386 ebbe inizio la costruzione del Duomo, già poteva essere percorso da grossi barconi. Per garantirne il transito gratuito e veloce dei barconi della Veneranda Fabbrica venne apposta la sigla AUF (dal l latino “ad usum Fabricae”), che nel gergo popolare diventò "ad ufo", passato poi come sinonimo di gratuito.
Nei pressi si svolse il 22 giugno 1636 la Battaglia di Tornavento, combattuta tra Franco-Sabaudi e Spagnoli per il predominio sul Ducato di Milano nel corso della Guerra dei Trent'Anni.

The Naviglio Grande is known for the Dock in Milan and the part faced by the famous noble villas. But where is really born? From the "spur" on the river Ticino of Tornavento, near the iron bridge built in 1890 and still used for transit.
The so-called "Incile" dates back to 1177, yrar of the start of the excavation of the Naviglio Grande, first called Ticinello because it uses the water resulting from the Ticino to irrigate crops, and it has remained unchanged even after almost eight centuries and a half at least in the initial section up to the hydroelectric Turbigo. Following it will be used for navigation and it will also change name to become the Naviglio Grande. There were reports of boats that sail as early as 1198. In 1269 will then be extended to Milan and Pavia, just in time to be used to transport the marble from Condoglia (at Verbania on Lake Maggiore) for the construction of the Cathedral of Milan.
In fact, after the increase of the water flow, in 1271 the canal was navigable as it began to be referred as "Navigium" and, when in 1386 began the construction of the cathedral, it could be covered by large barges. To ensure free and quick transit to Cathedral factory of the boats were in bearing the initials AUF (from the latin language "ad usum Fabricae"), which became popular in the jargon as a synonym for free.
Nearby in June 22, 1636 it was held the battle of Tornavento, fought between French-Savoy and the Spanish for dominance over the Duchy of Milan during the Thirty Years War.
