Dolceacqua (Imperia) - Castello Doria

            Il castello Doria è l'antico maniero di Dolceacqua, in provincia di Imperia, situato nella parte medievale del borgo (detto “Terra”).
La massiccia costruzione, che nella attuale struttura risale al secolo XVI, è composta da due alte torri quadrate agli angoli. Il forte è sovrastante l'abitato e posto in posizione dominante. La prima citazione del castello e del borgo di Dolceacqua, chiamata all'epoca Dulzana, risale al 1177 in un antico documento nella quale si attesta la proprietà dei conti di Ventimiglia. 
Originariamente la struttura militare era costituita nel XII secolo da una torre circolare, tuttora esistente al centro del complesso, e da un edificio minore dove risiedeva il corpo di guardia. Il castello fu ampliato nel XVI secolo dall'allora signore locale Stefano Doria, che aggiunse alla precedente struttura un bastione speronato nel settore orientale e le due torri quadrate gemelle.

Doria Castle is the ancient manor of Dolceacqua, in the province of Imperia, located in the medieval part of town (known as “Earth”).
The massive construction, that in the present structure dates from the sixteenth century, is composed of two high square towers on the corners. The fort overlooking the town and it is placed in a dominant position. The first mention of the castle and the village of Dolceacqua, called “Dulzana” at the time, dates back to 1177 in an ancient document stating the ownership of the counts of Ventimiglia.
Originally the fortress was founded in the twelfth century by a circular tower, which still exists at the center of the complex, and a smaller building where lived the guard. The castle was enlarged in the XVI century by the local lord Stefano Doria, which added to the previous structure a spur bastion in the eastern part and two twin square towers.
