Monza – L’Arengario - a photo on Flickriver

            L’Arengario rappresentava il palazzo pubblico dove a Monza nel medioevo si tenevano le assemblee del libero comune, si amministrava la giustizia e si regolava la vita economica e commerciale. Il palazzo sorge nel cuore della città, vicino alla basilica di San Giovanni, a sottolineare visivamente la contrapposizione dei poteri religioso e civile che anche a Monza contraddistinse il periodo medioevale.
Le caratteristiche architettoniche dell'edificio, molto simile al palazzo della Ragione di Milano anche se di proporzioni minori, conducono a una datazione prossima al tardo secolo XIII.
L'edificio a pianta rettangolare di m. 30 x 12 presenta al piano terra un ampio porticato costituito da 18 pilastri in pietra bicolore su cui si innestano direttamente gli archi a sesto acuto. Al primo piano la grande aula destinata alle adunanze si apre con un balconcino a loggetta, la “parlera”, e alla torre campanaria a merlatura ghibellina con coda di rondine del secolo XV.

The Arengario represented the public palace where the meetings were held in the Middle Age during the free commune age, justice was administered and the economic and commercial life was regulated. The building is located in the heart of the city, near the basilica of San Giovanni, to visually emphasize the juxtaposition of religious and civil authorities that distinguished the medieval period in Monza too.
The design of the building, much like the Palazzo della Ragione in Milan although of minor proportions, leading to a date next to the late thirteenth century.
The rectangular building of mt. 30 x 12 has a large porch on the ground floor consisting of 18 two-tone stone pillars on which the arches directly plug. The first-floor great hall intended to the meetings opens on a small balcony, the " parlera ", and on the bell tower of the fifteenth century with Ghibelline swallow-tails.
