Antica chiesa di Santa Fosca di Cadore, Val Fiorentina (Belluno)

            La chiesa di Santa Fosca si trova nell’omonima frazione di Selva di Cadore. Con lo sfondo del monte Pelmo costituisce l’immagine grafica del Cadore. E’ monumento nazionale e probabilmente l’edificio che meglio rappresenta l’architettura gotica alpina delle Dolomiti. E’ situata a 1.425 metri d'altezza.
L’edificio religioso venne menzionato per la prima volta in una pergamena del 1286. Poichè versava in stato di rovina fu riedificata nel 1421 mentre il campanile fu realizzato tra il 1454 e il 1456 e venne sopraelevato nel 1762. La facciata della chiesa è caratterizzata dal gigantesco  affresco rappresentante San Cristoforo. La chiesa è a unica navata e all’interno è decorata con affreschi. San Cristoforo viene rappresentato da una iconografia molto diffusa con grandi immagini quasi sempre nei muri esterni delle chiese, soprattutto ben visibili da lontano. Al santo è attribuito il potere di salvare le persone in imminente e improvviso pericolo di morte e perciò doveva essere visibile dalla campagna e dai luoghi di lavoro.

The church of Santa Fosca is situated in the village of Selva di Cadore. It is the graphic image of Cadore with the background of Mount Pelmo. It's a national monument and probably the building that best represents the gothic architecture of the Alpine Dolomites. It is situated at 1425 meters.
The religious building was mentioned for the first time in a document dated 1286. It was was rebuilt in 1421 and the bell tower was built between 1454 and 1456 and was upelevated in 1762. The facade of the church is characterized by the huge fresco of St. Christopher. The church has a single nave and the interior is decorated with frescoes. St. Christopher is represented by a widespread picture, with large images almost always on the outside walls of a church, especially visible from afar. The saint has the power to save people in imminent danger of sudden death and therefore he had to be visible from the countryside and places of work.
