Hutchison of Overtown, Buggy Bus, Optare 1:76

            A passenger waits to board this Hutchison Coaches of Overtown Optare Buggy Bus, which sets down at the Hospital bus stop opposite A&E whilst on service 4 to Coltness via Wishaw. 

This is a code 3, 1:76 scale (OO Gauge) Corgi Diecast model of an Optare Delta. It has been dismantled, stripped, repainted, received interior detailing and is finished with both Sunrise and custom waterslide transfers. These transfers include both fleet names and the “Buggy Bus” signage. This was the second Corgi Optare Delta to receive this treatment. In addition to adapting/refurbishing models to join my own model Hutchison fleet, I have also sold some. I had refurbished a coach into Hutchie’s Scottish Pullman livery and agreed to deliver it in person. This was how I met Mr John Hughes, a former long term driver of both Hutchison buses and coaches. Mr Hughes was an absolute gentleman and shared with me stories of journeys to Paris and Amsterdam. I came away from that meeting with a mini bottle of Irn Bru, courtesy of his partner, and a commission to repaint a service bus into Buggy Bus livery. I completed three, one in a lighter blue which didn’t look quite right, and two as pictured here. I again hand delivered it and had another very pleasant chat with John. I was very sad to hear recently that he had passed away. 

Opposite and in the background, an Oxford Diecast London style Hackney taxi in all over advertising for Scotland’s other national drink, Irn Bru, sits parked in the pick up zone. To the right is a Scottish Ambulance Service Urgent Tier vehicle. Both are parked in front of the Mossend District General Hospital diorama, created using the Kingsway Models kit of Holby A&E from UK television show Casualty.

Hutchison Coaches came to an end in 2007 as the owners looked to retire by selling their Overtown depot and fleet to First Glasgow/Lanarkshire. The depot and some of the vehicles are still in use to this day, with Wright bodied vehicles passing to First for service work and now Driver Training duties.
