On Thin Ice

            Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) cub on fresh ice off the northeast coast of Alaska. Threatened on multiple fronts by climate change, pollution and oil & gas development, among others, Polar Bears have a conservation status of "Vulnerable." Some scientists have predicted that two-thirds of the world's polar bears may disappear by 2050, based on moderate projections for the shrinking of summer sea ice triggered primarily by climate change, although the validity of this study has been debated. At any rate, this keystone species is currently on thin ice.
