Bighorn Sheep in Habitat - a photo on Flickriver

            Ram and Ewe Bighorn Sheep (Ovis canadensis) navigate the rim during a brief show shower. These animals survive and thrive in some beautiful and hazardous habitat. One of their coolest adaptations is their hooves - a soft, padded inner portion is surrounded by a hard outer rim. Their toes are split. This combination allows the Bighorns to navigate rock ledges as narrow as 2 inches wide. And they do it all with grace and flair. The ewe is collared - we heard there was a biologist out there darting and collaring sheep. We believe he was also inoculating them against pneumonia, to which the Bighorns are highly susceptible.
