Day Dreaming

            I visited the museum Panorama Mesdag, where the summer exhibition 'Moving Space' shows an overview of the work of the British artist Patrick Hughes (Birmingham, 1939).

Optical illusion is central to the paintings and 3-dimensional multiples of Hughes; the works seem to move with the eye of the beholder! Hughes is generally considered to be a surrealist artist.

This work, 'Day Dreaming' (2008) is an example of his reverse perspectives (reverspectives). How the 'painting' looks like depends on the point of view. When you move your head or walk around the painting, the view changes in an odd way. This is because the work is not flat but a 3-dimensional surface. The parts that seem optically further away are in fact closer to the viewer, and vice versa. This creates a mind-boggling experience, very special.
