3819 braves the snow - a photo on Flickriver

As we write, the first snows of 2017 have come to Greater Manchester and it reminds us that driving a bus in this weather is a huge responsibility with perhaps 80 souls on board with a risk of sliding in icy conditions.

It has always been the same, and Greater Manchester Transport bus number 3819 had exactly the same challenges forty years ago. In general these rear-engined buses are easier to drive than the old front-engined ones, but their coming created a new problem that wasn't foreseen. This was that putting the driver in with all the passengers, all breathing out warm moist air, made the windows steam up in cold weather including the windscreen. At the time windscreen demisters were new and not very efficient so it's our guess that the driver of 3819 brought a duster or cloth to work so he could wipe the screen from time to time. Modern buses have much better heating systems.
