Nocturnal Photography - a photo on Flickriver

            Union Pacific's E units and an excursion consist lay over in Bend, Oregon on September 30, 1995. Earlier in the day, the train had departed Portland Union Station, run through the Columbia River Gorge, and then covered the Oregon Trunk. It would return to the Rose City in the morning.

The headlight in the distance was an empty Burlington Northern sugar beet train. It was changing crews at Bend's stone depot. At the time, beets from Moses Lake, Washington were being hauled to Northern California for refining.

Today, the sugar beet trains are gone, and the Bend depot was removed for an expressway. The UP E units are still around, but the odds they will visit Central Oregon any time soon are very slim.
