Experiment: CMOS vs. CCD vs. Foveon X3

            This morning I conducted an experiment: I shot the same scene in quick succession with three digital cameras that use sensors of a very different make: the now almost ubiquitous CMOS type, the CCD type that was used exclusively in the first generation of digital cameras and Sigma's Foveon X3, which leads a niche existence.

This one was shot with an Epson R-D1x with an APS-C sized CCD sensor. 

Overall, I find that this has the best colour rendering and best retains the nuances in the hues. None of the highlights are blown out (contrary to the CMOS sensor) and there are no strange colour shifts (as with the Foveon sensor).

Interesting that such an old and by now largely abandoned sensor design can still hold its own against much newer technology.
