Built to take punishment (revisited)

In the 1970s, the crew of a F4 Phantom fighter was trying to photograph another F4 in flight. Both aircraft collided and disintegrated, their crews ejected.

The camera, a Leicaflex SL2 MOT with a motor drive and a Summicron-R 35 mm lens, fell thousands of metres from the tumbling wreckage and landed in the Nevada desert.

One would think that that was enough punishment, but no. After several years in the desert, someone found it. He unsuccessfully tried to pry open the camera back to extract the film. Probably he didn't know that you have to push a lever clockwise and at the same time pull the rewind crank upwards.

The camera body resisted his clumsy attempts, and he took it to a camera dealer, who rewound the film properly, opened the camera, extracted the undamaged film and developed it.
