"Mother, Daughter, Doll" by Boushra Almutawakel, #2

            This image by Yemeni photographer Boushra Almutawakel uses the veil to challenge social trends and explore the complexities of public identity. Religious extremism, increasingly pervasive in her native Yemen, calls for women and even the girls to conceal their bodies when outside the home. Rather than denounce the 'hijab' (headscarf) these staged portraits protest the covering of young women and, in particular, the use of the more extensive 'niqab' which covers the entire face and is typically made of dark fabric.

One of Yemen's first female photographers, Boushra Almutawakel has explored the boundary of female identity ever since she was in art school. She aims to provoke discussions about social norms and question the ways people and cultures judge one another. Having studied in America, Boushra has returned to live and work in Sana'a in Yemen. Her photographs—controversial among Yemenis—seem designed mainly for a Western audience.

This photograph was seen on display at The Cantor Arts Center on the campus of Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. The exhibit is entitled "She Who Tells a Story: Women Photographers from Iran and the Arab World".
