"Qajar" by Shadi Ghadirian, #1 - a photo on Flickriver

            This image, part of a series entitled "Qajar" by Iranian photographer Shadi Ghadirian, depicts conscious choices made by women in Iran and elsewhere; an act of rebellion, of subtlety, of changes foreseen.  The photo is shocking not only for its anachronistic props, but for the sheer brazenness of Ghadirian's subject: defiant in her gangsta posturing and holding a ridiculously large ghetto-blaster. 

Ghadirian's humorous pastiches set up encounters between different times and cultures: The European-influenced backdrop of a 19th century Qajar-era Persian photographer is juxtaposed with contemporary studio props....."forbidden" or restricted objects like the boom box the subject is holding.  Made at a time when such activities as playing or listening to music in public were taboo in Iran, this photograph suggests tensions between tradition and modernity....restriction and freedom.... public and private.  

Shadi Ghadirian was born in 1974 in Tehran, Iran. She is a photographer who continues to live and work in Iran.  Her work is intimately linked to her identity as a Muslim woman living in Iran. Nonetheless, her art also deals with issues relevant to women living in other parts of the world.   

This photograph was seen on display at The Cantor Arts Center on the campus of Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.  The exhibit is entitled "She Who Tells a Story: Women Photographers from Iran and the Arab World".
