Paris: The Great Palace (Grand Palais)

            The Grand Palais des Champs-Élysées, commonly known as the Grand Palais (Great Palace), is a large historic site, exhibition hall and museum complex on the right bank of the Seine river in Paris, France.

Construction of the Palace began in 1897 in preparation for the Universal Exposition of 1900 which was to display the "glory of French art".  A competition to choose the architect resulted in the selection of four architects: Henri Degland, Albert Louvet, Albert Thomas and, Charles Girault.  Inspired by London's 'Crystal Palace', the main structure was constructed with an iron, steel and glass barrel-vaulted room that was necessary for large indoor crowds before the age of electricity.  The grand opening of the Exposition took place in May, 1900.  Art exhibitions took place in this structure for the next thirty years.  

The Palace served as a military hospital during WWI,  During the Occupation of France by the Nazi's in WWI, it was first used as a truck depot and later housed two Nazi propaganda exhibitions.  The French Resistance used the Palace as their headquarters during the Liberation of Paris in 1944.  Today the structure houses many art exhibitions and shows and also includes a Science museum as well as a major police station in the basement.
